UAE exports to Japan jump 60% in 10 months

Strong oil prices allied with costlier commodity to boost the UAE's exports to Japan by nearly 60 per cent in the first 10 months of 2008 to maintain its position as the second-largest Arab trade partner of the Asian giant. The UAE tops the list of Middle East export destinations for Singapore's IT and telecoms companies, according to official figures. The Emirates accounted for 71 per cent of exports last year, says the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), a government body. Dubai's non-oil foreign trade, including trade via free zones and customs warehouses, surged by 44.5 per cent during the first nine months of 2008 ending in September, compared to the corresponding period in 2007, the latest report by Dubai World's Statistics Department revealed. Dubai's exports to major markets, affected by the credit crunch, could fall in 2009, but trade with other countries such as India could cushion the impact, UAE-based exporters said. The amount of Dubai's exports in the third quarter, which stood at Dh56.6 billion, is still higher than last year's Dh45.3 billion. Japan's imports of UAE crude oil reached 26.6 million barrels during last October, representing 22.4 percent of the country's total imports of crude oil. According to a statistical report released by Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade '&' industry, Saudi Arabia emerged as Japan's largest crude supplier during October with 38 million barrels, followed by the UAE, Iran, Qatar and Kuwait respectively. Commercial relations between the UAE and China have witnessed big growth over the last few year with an annual growth rate of 34 per cent, said Mohammed Ahmed bin Abdul Aziz Al Shehi, Undersecretary of Ministry of Economy. Dubai exports increase 25% to Dh57bn

The value of exports and re-exports shipped by members of the Dubai Chamber of Trade and Industry in the third quarter of 2008 has totalled Dh56.6 billion. This was 25 per cent higher than the Dh45.3bn registered during the same period in 2007. The UAE's exports for 2008 are forecast to reach Dh757.8 billion, up from an estimated Dh607.7 billion in 2007, while its import levels this year are forecast to reach Dh491.7 billion, the Oxford Business Group said in 'The Report: Abu Dhabi 2008', released here on Monday. Rice trade in Dubai has made a quantum leap in terms of value during the first six months of 2008, achieving a remarkable 155.3 per cent rise compared to the same period of last year. Fuelled by rising demand for transport equipment and electrical machinery, Japan's exports to the UAE climbed by 33.1 per cent to US$8 billion (Dh29.4 billion) in 2007, compared to US$6 billion in 2006. Dubai's total trade of polished diamonds reached US$5.29 billion at the end of the first six months of 2008, the Dubai Diamond Exchange (DDE), a subsidiary of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), announced yesterday. Bilateral non-oil trade between Dubai and France increased by 26.7 per cent in the first half of 2008, compared with that of the same period in 2007. Total of GCC imports through UAE ports and borders soared to Dh36 billion from 2003 to 2007, according to Mohammed Khalifa bin Fahad Al Muhairi, director general of the Federal Customs Authority (FCA).
